I collaborated with Alessandro Maggi in Dr. Moffatt’s lab. We wanted to investigate the role that exogenous Nitric Oxide had on neuronal repair mechanisms. To do that we used a compound (a NO-donor) that once put inside a Gryllus, it cleaved to release NO. We monitored differences between the treated and untreated insects by means of fluorescent immune-labeling and we had initial evidence that an excess of Nitric Oxide upon neuronal damage actually increased neuroblast mitosis. This was verified via immunohistochemistry.
