CurrentThe HEPIUS (Holistic Electrical, Ultrasonic, and Physiological Interventions Unburdening Those with Spinal Cord Injury) team aims to design and develop a system of systems comprising an entirely new class of implantable and wearable ultrasound medical devices to aid spinal cord injury patients in both the acute and chronic phases of injury.The HEPIUS Innovation Labs consist of multiple multidisciplinary labs at various campuses across Johns Hopkins, from the schools of engineering and medicine to Johns Hopkins Bayview and the Applied Physics Lab.Our mission is to identify major clinical needs for spinal cord injury patients and drive the development of new imaging modalities, drug delivery and minimally invasive therapeutic technologies. We then translate these advances to clinical use and develop the medicine of tomorrow.

Johns Hopkins Biomedical Engineering Department offers a Design Team Program for undergraduate students. The program consists of a set of nine design team courses offered through the Johns Hopkins Department of Biomedical Engineering — ranked as the #1 biomedical engineering program nationally.To mimic the design process as practiced in industry, the Design Team program follows the classical design process: problem definition, conceptual design, preliminary design, prototype, redesign, test, and prototype refinement. Over the course of an academic year, student teams work with clinicians, engineers, and experienced industry advisors to design, build, and test devices that solve significant health care needs. Their projects are unveiled in early May in CBID’s annual Design Day event/showcase/celebration.Over the past six years, these design teams have completed 66 medical device projects, upon which the university has filed nine provisional patents (with three patent applications pending) and negotiated two licensing agreements. The program has garnered more than $1M in external funding since 2001 in the form of three program grants, more than two dozen project grants and countless awards in national design and business plan competitions. Project successes translate into recognition for CBID undergrad designers that contributes to cementing their future success in biomedical engineering.

As a Research Associate Faculty in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, and the "Director of Innovations" @ Johns Hopkins Carnegie Center for Surgical Innovations, I was in charge of initiating collaborations with external collaborators such as clinician scientist surgeons and biomedical engineers. In addition to that, I was also responsible for conducting translational research, such as clinical trials of matured technologies in the engineering labs.
