About Amit Sharma

Ph.D. in Materials Engineering with more than ten years of research experience in thin films, functional materials, material characterization along with strong communication and analytical skills. My research interests broadly encompass understanding the functional and mechanical responses of materials at multiple length scales and microstructure-property correlation in materials. My postdoctoral research at the Israel Institute of Technology, Technion focusses on understanding the mechanical and structural properties of equilibrium metal and alloy particles fabricated by solid state dewetting, with special interests on the role of interfaces in Ni-Fe bilayers and single crystalline particles. The work involves in-situ mechanical testing using Pico indenter, and cross-section microstructure analyses using focused ion beam and TEM/STEM-EDS and EELS (probe corrected microscopy (THEMIS) to study the evolution of microstructure, quantitative composition analysis, high-resolution X-ray diffraction and mechanical response. In my doctoral thesis, which was carried out at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore, I studied the role of growth conditions such as deposition temperature and deposition pressure and substrate selection on the evolution of crystallographic texture and magnetic properties in sputter deposited intermetallic Ni-Mn- Ga thin films. Microstructure and magnetic characterization techniques involving orientation imaging by HR-TEM, Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), TEM- EBSD and High-resolution X-ray diffraction were part of this work. As an experimentalist, I have operational experience in techniques such as electron microscopy, orientation image mapping and micro-mechanical testing to perform extensive characterization and analyses of microstructures and mechanical properties.
