I am a senior researcher at Martel Innovate, where my focus is on developing a computing continuum—a cutting-edge meta-operating system that seamlessly integrates cloud, Edge, and IoT devices, providing users with a unified interface. Our meta-OS, FLUIDOS, is built on Kubernetes and supports serverless computing. My work at Martel has provided me with extensive experience in writing proposals, forming consortia, and managing large-scale European-funded projects.In my role as a post-doctoral researcher, my current focus revolves around creating an intelligent swarm of robots. I have identified three key technologies for this endeavor: deep learning for robot perception, deep reinforcement learning and evolutionary algorithms for robot control, and audio-based coordination and communication. To advance this research, I have undertaken significant initiatives. Firstly, I conducted a thorough survey comparing evolutionary computing and deep reinforcement learning, highlighting their respective strengths and weaknesses. Secondly, I developed an autonomous indoor navigation robot to contribute to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. I also explored cost-effective techniques to extend the range of depth cameras for person detection. Currently, I am working on leveraging audio for relative robot localization and communication, harnessing its unique capabilities in non-line-of-sight scenarios.During my PhD studies, I specialized in designing software architectures for energy-harvesting battery-free devices, driven by the goal of reducing our reliance on batteries and their environmental impact. In the initial stages, I developed a power-failure immune kernel for these devices, ensuring memory consistency and uninterrupted program execution despite frequent power disruptions. I validated the effectiveness of this kernel by implementing various applications, including a compact battery-less robot. Subsequently, I focused on creating an exceptionally energy-efficient network for battery-free devices. This involved building a network stack from scratch to enable multi-hop backscatter radio frequency (RF) communication, eliminating the need for power emission by nodes and relying on ambient energy instead. Lastly, I tackled the challenge of enabling continuous sensing on intermittently powered sensors by studying and modeling the collective behavior of sensor groups. These findings have opened up possibilities for innovative applications such as battery-free smart wallpaper.
