As a production chemist, I work as part of a small team in the small-scale manufacture of flavour and fragrance chemicals for use in the food industry. Day to day I must efficiently manage my time between the production of multiple products and use my keen analytical skills to correctly characterise these products. Due to the nature of the work in my current position working safely but efficiently is very important, I am constantly trying to improve processes and evaluating possible risk involved in each process.

My primary tasks involved general nursery maintenance, upkeep and plant care, such as watering, fertilizing and monitoring greenhouse temperature. During my time at Bell Nursery I was given additional responsibilities which included managing orders, sales, shipments and deliveries which helped me improve both my organisation and communication skills. On occasion I represented the company at trade shows throughout the year.

This was a research based placement which aimed to make an operationally simple Sonogashira reaction for an undergraduate laboratory class. The placement involved working in a lab environment which further improved my lab skills and techniques. For example, I was trained in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The placement helped me improve my time management skills and problem solving abilities as I had to design the experiments to be completed within eight hours and to be easily repeatable. If they didn't work, I strategized the necessary adjustments to fix them. I also contributed to the drafting of the resulting scientific research paper which has been published in the Journal of Chemical Education.
