‘Analytical fatigue life prediction of shot peened aerospace grade 300M steel’ Partners: Bell Helicopter Textron Canada, Pratt & Whitney Canada, L3-Communications MAS, Héroux Devtek, École Polytechnique de Montréal, École de Technologie Supérieure, McGill University, IAR-AMTC (National Research Council center), Consortium for Research and Innovation in Aerospace of Québec – CRIAQ and Mitacs.Fatigue failure is said to occur when a component subjected to repeated loads fails at a stress much lower than its constituting material’s yield stress. It is responsible for the failure of a vast majority of engineering structures such as aircrafts, bridges, trains, etc. An economical and effective way of enhancing the fatigue resistance of materials is by the process of shot peening. Shot peening is a cold working process which induces compressive residual stresses and strain hardening on the material surface. A multi-scale approach to understanding the effect of peening on the fatigue life of materials widely used in the aerospace industry and thus developing a reliable fatigue life prediction tool was undertaken. Main tasks :1)Extensive experimental campaigns involving analysis of material microstructural (grain size, texture, micro hardness) and macro structural characteristics (static and cyclic mechanical property testing-tensile test , cyclic yield, etc.), long and short crack growth behavior, crack initiation analysis and residual stress relaxation studies for unpeened and peened conditions.2)Development of fatigue life model for 300M steel from the data gathered in the above experiments
