I have been able to learn many different things about metabolism and biochemistry in my role as a research assistant at UCSD. I have also been given the opportunity to teach high school students, undergraduates, and post-doctorates about cell culture and aseptic techniques. During my time here, I worked with revolutionary technology like Agilent's Seahorse Pro analyzer that measures oxygen consumption rate and extracellular acidification rate within a cell. I also used the BioTek Cytation imaging reader to observe reactive oxidative species (ROS) when cells were treated with compounds such as antivirals, antibiotics, OTC medication, antifungals, serum, plasma, and more. Dysfunction in cellular metabolism can affect many organ systems because the energy needs are not being met. Diseases like Alzheimer's, heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson's, etc. may arise due to mitochondria being impacted by unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, medications, genetic factors, and/or poor lifestyle choices. I'm excited that I have learned so much in my time here and strive to make more advancements in this field.
