One approach focused on engineering the metabolism of the strain to produce higher yields of bacterial cellulose. The second approach focused on engineering the ability to functionalise the bacterial cellulose membrane by harnessing native and non-native secretion systems by secreting proteins of interest into the bacterial cellulose matrix. Once the bacterial cellulose matrix is loaded with the protein it would confer its activity/function to the matrix, developing an ELM that is able to bioremediate waste water and having used a Golden Gate Toolkit format, this allowed for combinatorial library production to screen for higher functioning strains.
