  • American Chemical Society
Director Of Editorial & Business Development, C&En Asia
American Chemical Society Apr 2014 - Aug 2015
    Washington, Dc & Asia
I led C&EN's outreach in Asia, expanded coverage of Asia, and raised ACS's and C&EN's visibility in Asia. I also recruited and trained Asia-based journalists, as well as explored new business activities and editorial products catering to Asian audiences.
  • C&En At American Chemical Society
    Editor-In-Chief
C&En At American Chemical Society Sep 2012 - Mar 2014
    Washington, Dc
I led Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN)--the flagship newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society (ACS) to new levels of excellence and achievement. C&EN is a world-class, science-focused news organization. It publishes news about the global chemistry enterprise daily online and weekly in print. Its primary audience is the membership of ACS, about 160,000 individuals around the world. Through its Web presence, C&EN extends its reach beyond ACS members. As Editor-In-Chief, I ensured the high journalistic quality of C&EN's editorial content, managed the C&EN brand, planned and implemented the $20M+ expense budget, and oversaw the work of 50+ science journalism professionals based in the U.S., Europe, and Asia. I represented the publication before academic and industry audiences; I reached out to readers through weekly editorials and direct conversations in response to letters to the editor; and I engaged with diverse stakeholders, including advertisers.I led a comprehensive review of the publication to identify strategic changes to help the publication adapt to continual changes in audience behavior wrought by rapidly changing technology in news gathering and sharing. The findings have been informing strategic changes at C&EN.A highlight of my stint is the yearlong celebration of C&EN's 90th anniversary, in 2013: a weekly visual blog in Tumblr, monthly editorials, a fabulous special issue with a commemorative poster, and a grand, sold-out live event in Indianapolis featuring celebrity chef Alton Brown.
  • American Chemical Society
    Deputy Editor-In-Chief, C&En
American Chemical Society Jan 2007 - Sep 2012
I worked closely with the editor in chief in overseeing daily operations, long-range planning, and the budget; supervised five managers who were responsible for 40+ writers and editors. I implemented the salary budget, ensuring the equitable allocation of the salary merit pool across the organization. Working with various ACS teams, I helped conceive, design, and launch products and services to establish new sources of revenue, extend C&EN's reach, or address subscribers' concerns, including C&EN Mobile, C&EN SCENEs, C&EN Archives, C&EN Picks, C&EN Webinars, C&EN Connect, and C&EN Electronic Delivery. With C&EN staff and ACS Washington IT, I helped set priorities and make decisions on major technology upgrade to automate C&EN workflows. To advance the broader goals of ACS, I collaborated across ACS units, offering expertise and insight, thereby developing a reputation as a knowledgeable resource and dependable team player. As an ambassador for C&EN, I engaged with various stakeholders, strengthened relationships with the international chemistry business and academic communities, and forged new links in Asia and the Middle East.
  • American Chemical Society
    Managing Editor, C&En
    American Chemical Society 2006 - 2007
I was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the magazine, ensuring that daily and weekly productions were of the highest quality possible and delivered on schedule.I ensured coordination among various editors in assigning, developing, and editing stories for specific issues, as well as a pipeline of stories for future issues. In supervising four assistant managing editors, I put greatest emphasis on raising the quality of writing by C&EN reporters.Other achievements include launching a redesign of the print magazine, completing the C&EN policies and ethics handbook, and publishing a special pharma issue, which I conceived and executed.
