About Ariel M. Scisney

“If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants.” This quote from Sir Isaac Newton perfectly crystalizes the human experience. We are born a clean slate, we live our lives grasping for meaning, and if all goes well we will have learned enough in our short flash of life to leave something behind for the next generation to build upon. Now, after 13.8 billion years of cosmic expansion, 4 billion years of biological evolution, and two hundred millennia of human inquisition, I find myself at the dawn of a new millennium, one of seven billion minds bearing the torch of the grand human endeavor. I see now that everything is connected. Culture is based on our history, history depends on psychology, psychology depends on neurology, the evolution of neurology depends on biology and ecology, biology depends on chemistry, and chemistry on physics, all of which can be described mathematically. In that spirit, I hope to help humanity by better understanding how consciousness can arise from stardust. My goals are twofold; first to understand the universe and the complex beings who reside within it, and second to understand the natural world well enough to be able to share my discoveries with a global society, especially the general public. To reach these goals, I hope to pursue a lifelong career of learning and education as both student and teacher—in order to better understand the nature of consciousness.

Listed skills include Public Speaking, Leadership, Customer Service, Research, and 35 others.

Save Jeffco Dome

Save Jeffco Dome is a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to reopening The Robert H. Johnson Planetarium in Lakewood CO. To Donate: https://gofund.me/abc3fd4eThis building provided a space for thousands of students to learn about the stars for decades. Unfortunately the planetarium was closed in 2009 and has been neglected since. We are dedicated to seeing this staple of the Lakewood community reopened so the next generation of students and the public can have access to the night sky. After restoration, we envision the planetarium providing walk in and scheduled shows covering both educational and entertainment content for all ages. The theater would also be open to the public for events ranging from concerts and movies, to speeches and other community activities.

Researcher For The Origins Of Life Initiative

Cambridge, Massachusetts, Us

I worked in the Aspuru-Guzik lab doing computational analysis on various chemicals relating to abiogenesis, the first transition from chemistry to self-replicating biology. This work was based on previous research conducted by Jack Szostak on non-enzymatic template driven RNA replication. It is based on one hypothesis on how life originated on earth, the "RNA-world hypothesis" which postulates that the first self-replicating organisms were based on ribonucleic acid, due to its ability to act both as genetic information that produces complex proteins, as well as a catalyst that spurs on replication. Research at the time was based on replicating RNA using templates that mononucleotides can bind to, thus creating longer strains of RNA that will eventually self-replicate. My specific task was to run a conformation analysis of activated mononucleotides to get transition states to compare to approximations using hydrolyzed imidazole, as they are good surrogates for what was likely available shortly after the Earth first formed. Since these reactions take place in water, sometimes templates prefer to react with the water (hydrolyzing) instead of the templates, and this has been a major hurdle that researchers have needed to overcome. By doing conformational analysis of various nucleotides, our goal was to find the shape of these chemicals that had the least amount of electrochemical potential energy, because those conformers would have been most ideal for replication. Once we found the minimum energy conformer, we did a transition state analysis in order to determine how that version of the nucleotide reacted with water, by looking at the potential energy curve of each imidazolide, in order to determine the tipping point at which the nucleotide would be more likely to react with water as opposed to replicating. We managed to do this with three imidazolides, as a way of theoretically verifying experimental results that had already been published by Professor Szostak.

Presenter And Navigator, Head Laserist, Rental Supervisor, Outreach Member, And Schedule Coordinator

Fiske Planetarium

As a student employee, I facilitated live public shows and tours of the cosmos within a state of the art theatre, as well as private rentals for companies, birthdays, and University faculty. I developed new programs and special effects for regular performances, and educational content for classes. I also represented the planetarium on outreach to schools and public events, giving demonstrations on infrared light, meteorites, and tours of the universe using our mini-dome. As head laserist and a senior team member, I facilitated training for new presenters and navigators, teaching them how to use planetarium hardware and software, as well as to operate laser equipment. I scheduled public music shows and decided when to order new shows. I also learned how to program effects using DigitalSky software, and learned how to use that knowledge to create new special effects in real-time during shows. This knowledge also gave me experience in troubleshooting planetarium equipment in emergencies. For public shows, I gave lectures paired with fulldome films about topics including (but not limited to):•Solar physics •Climate science on various planets•Stellar life cycles and post stellar remnants (black holes, neutron stars, white dwarfs)•Constellations in the night sky for various cultures•On-Earth Astronomy•The formation of structure (planets to galaxy clusters)•Astrobiology•Scales of the universeFor school groups, I taught interactive labs to students in grades K-12 about:•Light and lasers•Electricity and Magnetism•The science of sound•Telescopes and optics•Rockets and KinematicsAs a navigator, one has the freedom to travel anywhere in the visible universe, and can even create objects and effects to manipulate planets, galaxies, and more. After spending thousands of nights under the dome, I now have a near 3D model of the universe committed to memory. Flying through space has given me a flexible mind, and a deep passion for the majesty of the cosmos.

Gs-01 Clerk, Human Resources (Hr) For The Bureau Of Reclamation

Washington, Dc, Us

Originally only scheduled as a summer intern, thanks to hard-work and diligence I was given the opportunity to continue working for Reclamation by moving from SSLE to HR. During the last hours of the business day, I filled in as the front desk receptionist for the high-traffic HR Operations Office. During summers and school vacations, I worked full-time as a general clerk for the entire HR office, assisting specialists and fulfilling miscellaneous office tasks in order to assist the office running smoothly. I also personally boxed and moved personal belongings between buildings during our building's renovation. The groups I primarily assisted were the training department, workers compensation, and management. For the training department, I coordinated trainee names, moved supplies, and reserved/organized training rooms. For workers compensation, I was given responsibility over sensitive files containing personal information on reclamation employees, and was tasked with digitizing hundreds of documents. For management, I worked closely with secretarial staff to organize files, calendars, and supplies.
