Uki Consolidations & Plan Lead - Software Group
As the Software Group Finance & Planning Consolidation Lead for UKI, I report directly to the CFO of the Software Group business to consolidate financial results and plan budgets for a $1bn per annum organisation. As the Plan Lead for SWG UKI, I am responsible for coordinating the SWG budget from a financial perspective. Twice a year I will lead Software Group operational leaders through the budget process, deploying budget numbers to the various units of the business. This role has given me considerable experience in consolidating data on prior year actual results and modelling them against aspiration numbers provided by operations teams right down to customer level.I help to provide Software Group and Finance executives insight into key budget items that need to be considered when setting budgets for the period ahead, and ensuring fair adjustments are achieved. Another key aspect of the plan is the deployment of sales quotas to the sales teams. I work closely with the operations teams to provide assistance in the quota deployment process whereby the teams will split the budget down into the various dimensions through which the Software Group business operates, and ensure that each sales person has a target locked in the system. The other key part of my role is the Consolidation Lead, the role of which is to support the CFO in providing a complete financial view of the SWG business, from revenue right down to profit before tax and interest. It is my role to ensure that all of the forecasts from the various different teams are assessed and taken together to provide the most accurate view of where we will land on a monthly/quarterly basis. I am required to coordinate the daily review input from our finance and planning team during each month end close and consolidate for review with the CFO each morning to provide our ‘Performance View’ (PV).
Uki Global Technology Services - Strategic Outsourcing Accountant
My role as a GTS-SO accountant was to be the main accounting contact for the Strategic Outsourcing contracts within the Communication, Distribution, and Cross-Industry Portfolio industry sectors. Typically, contracts in strategic outsourcing span over ten years and can be worth hundreds of millions of dollars. As such the accounting requirements can be complex and requires careful tracking throughout the life of the contract. The largest signing I was responsible for during my tenure in accounting was over $200m. This gave me a firm grounding in the accounting complexities surrounding large services contracts that span such a large time frame. Fundamental to this role was the interpretation and application of IAS18 in regard to the accounting treatment of large outsourcing contracts. The key accounting implication around large outsourcing contracts is often where there is what is defined as ‘transition and transformation’ (T&T) work that is carried out on a contract before the delivery of service can commence. The commercial reality of such work is that significant cost is incurred at the start of a contract without any revenue to offset, thus driving a significantly negative gross profit. My role would be to act as a Trusted Business Advisor, providing timely guidance to Pricing and Commercial Management on the accounting complexities that need to be considered in our outsourcing contracts. Other key aspects of this role include providing accounting guidance for terminated contracts, new contract reviews to examine accounting implications, and being an interlock point for external auditors.
Ibm Global Financing Accountant
I joined IBM in November 2010, and my first role, based in North Harbour, Portsmouth was in the IBM Global Financing Accounting Centre of Excellence. IBM Global Financing (IGF) is an independent legal entity to IBM and enables credit-qualified clients to acquire the IT solutions they need in the most cost-effective and strategic way. IGF has enabled clients to finance hardware, software and services in 55 countries in the last 30 years. The main benefit to clients is that they avoid the significant capital outlay that investment in IT invariably involves, and often at a more competitive interest rate than a bank would offer. My role was the Volumes Accountant for France, reporting to an accounting manager for the team, who reported directly to the Chief Accountant of IBM Global Financing for Europe. Each month end, I would pro-actively engage with the IGF Sales and Business Support Operations teams in order to ascertain the correct level of volume accrual that was required to be booked in the ledger. This would be to reflect the amount of leasing and loan contracts signed during the month for IBM France. Once an individual contract had been tested against IBM’s internal revenue recognition guidelines, it would be my responsibility to post manual journals in the ledger to ensure that the correct revenue was recorded in the ledger.Outside of month end, I completed balance sheet reconciliations of all accounts under my responsibility. Any items that were unexpected were aged and tracked through to resolution. Each item would be investigated to find a root cause, and a decision would be made as to how to clear it from the reconciliation. Items that had had been aging for the longest time tend to take priority to clear from the reconciliations. The manager of my accounting team in IGF would have to sign off all of my reconciliations each month and be satisfied that any action plans put in place to clear aged items were robust and realistic.
Inventory Control Intern - The Saltire Foundation
As part of the Saltire Foundation, I worked for IBM as an intern in Shenzhen, China for two months in the summer of 2009 as an Inventory Control Intern. I was responsible for the preparation of daily inventory reports, analysis of adverse variances, communicating daily status to senior management in Shenzhen, and also in US.
