Amy Adams is responsible for nurturing and advancing biohealth research and innovation interests of more than 200 faculty and thousands of students who represent a broad range of academic disciplines. Her role includes fostering partnerships with industry, healthcare, government, and academic partners. To foster a vibrant research community, the Institute for Biohealth Innovation provides research development and multidisciplinary research operations support as well as focused attention on marketing and communications. Valuing the importance of creating a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts, Amy is dedicated to working with partners across the state and region to grow the Biohealth Capital Region biohealth ecosystem.

As Associate Director of the Institute for Biohealth Innovation, Amy and her team support a vibrant multidisciplinary research community of faculty and students who work together and in partnership with others to make breakthroughs in biohealth research.

Dr. Lance Liotta, Dr. Emanuel Petricoin III, and I developed the Aspiring Scientists Summer Internship Program (ASSIP) in 2007 to engage high school and undergraduate students in cutting edge scientific research related to Proteomics, Genomics, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biodefense, Bioinformatics, Nanotechnology, and Environmental Science, Bioengineering, and more. ASSIP has provided hundreds of high school and undergraduate students with hands-on scientific research experiences at Mason and at industry sites. The program continues to grow and inspire the next generation of scientific leaders.

My research at the Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine focused on using laser capture microdissection, western blotting, and reverse phase protein microarray technology to investigate the phosphorylation events in signaling pathways for the discovery of new rational drug targets and mapping protein pathways which can be applied to disease diagnosis and prognosis. Prior to working on this team, I also used genomic technologies to study signaling pathway networks in cancer. In addition to conducting research, I led outreach efforts and created programs including the Aspiring Scientists Summer Internship Program and the Galileo’s Science Café to engage high school and undergraduate students in research across STEM disciplines, communicate science to the public, and foster internal and external collaborations.
