I'm a passionate educator in a diverse undergraduate population who has educated students in over 54 courses. Clear communication of learning objectives, all potential hazards within the laboratory, proper waste disposal and strict enforcement of proper PPE is a priority. These actions serve to foster a safe and efficient learning environment for students in an interactive laboratory setting.General Chemistry Discussion (Chem 001A)I am responsible for clearly communicating general chemistry concepts which re-enforce lecture content. This is accomplished by sincerely encouraging student participation which creates an open and friendly learning environment. Supplementary materials provided include summaries of important concepts, additional problems worked step-by-step, and quizzes to examine 'sticking points' in students' learning outcomes.Communicating a love of science and making it accessible to students is an objective. Research Advisor – Dr. Hill Harman• Synthesize novel ligands and ligand-metal complexes using organic and inorganic syntheses using Schlenck (air-free) techniques.• Discovered new transition metal (TM) silylene complexes capable of small molecule activation across the metal–silylene interaction.• Developed protocols for purifying and isolating air-sensitive metal complexes by means of chromatography and/or recrystallization prior to reactivity with small molecule substrates.• Perform analyses using NMR on novel single molecule TM complexes to elucidate structure prior to and following exposure to substrate.• Verify identity of compounds with mass spectrometry.• Analyze reaction products using infrared (IR) spectroscopy.• Established crystal growth conditions of air-sensitive compounds for high quality single crystals for submission of X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses.• Maintain GloveBox equipment valued in excess of $35,000 including: disassembly/assembly/catalyst bed and GloveBox glove replacement.• Successfully utilized Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) instruments for the investigation of metal complexes in the solution-state including: probe changing procedures/Variable Temperature (VT) protocols.• Interpret and analyze data with various software including MestraNova, Conquest and Mercury.• Experienced in proper safe handling of pyrophoric materials, compressed gases and cryogenic liquids. • Clearly, succinctly communicate findings with detailed results and figures at team meetings and conferences.In Dr. Harman's lab I have demonstrated interesting results using a range of small molecules with a novel nickel-silylene complex.
