I have worked in many sectors, but my heart and values have always been about people, whether that's as an advocate or a nursery assistant, in the community or retail - it's people that make me tick! I started my career working for two charities, both focused on the needs and wishes of people who have a learning disability. I also lectured at the University of Winchester, primarily on their Social Care degree. I then moved into working with children, initially in a secondary school and then in childcare and enjoyed a few years of observing and nurturing their growth. My heart was being tugged by the voluntary sector though and after a stint as a Wellbeing Worker at Community First, I found my dream job at Winchester Young Carers as the Activities Lead. I'm a creative thinker with a positive attitude to overcoming barriers. I am quick to put people at ease, compassionate and empathetic with a natural warmth. I treat everyone with the same respect, dignity and compassion and listen without judgement. I am often referred to as sunshine by the people in my life because of my smiley and bubbly disposition. Social justice is absolutely at the forefront of my values.In my spare time I like to embarrass my teenage children (by simply existing!), tend my garden, go on walks in nature and swim in the sea, rivers and lakes. I love singing and listening to a broad range of music and podcasts. I also really enjoy reading and I'm always looking for book recommendations. I can speak fluent French and some Spanish, although I’m a bit rusty. I am a trained choir leader for Singing Mamas.I was lucky enough to have an international upbringing, living in Denmark, America and Switzerland which gave me a great appreciation for cultural diversity. I feel very passionate about human rights, equality and inclusion and I use my private social media platform to help inform and educate friends and family around all sorts of issues that are important to me; e.g. LGBTQIA+ rights, fatphobia, ADHD/neurodiversity issues, the plight of displaced people, amongst other important social issues.
