As an Azure Training Architect, I endeavor to develop and produce engaging and creative course materials that include real-world, hands-on and scenario-driven content, designed to prepare students to meet both educational and professional goals. Courses employ advanced training tools in a variety of content mediums, including (but not limited to) video lessons, live lab environments, quizzes, certification study guides and flashcards, and instructor-moderated community discussion groups, which are topically organized around course content. Having a platform for my corny jokes and tortured analogies is one of my favorite perks of the work. I am thrilled to be joining a company whose mission is to "teach the world to cloud." 2 million down, 7 billion (give or take) to go.

Reporting directly to the CTO, I led a department of 21 software engineers and data professionals, organized into small scrum teams, with architectural influence over a platform that impacted the work of dozens of additional analysts and developers in other departments. With much of our network infrastructure in Azure, the Data Platform team was focused on bringing a broad range of vendor-controlled assets under Bright Health’s direct control. The new data platform employs a combination of tried-and-true on-prem data management technologies, such as SSIS and SSRS, being replaced by Azure SaaS and PaaS services, such as Data Factory, Azure Pipelines, Logic Apps, Function Apps, Cosmos DB, Power BI, Event Grid, Service Bus, Azure Kubernetes, Cognitive Search, and others.

Sharing zone leadership with a product manager and director of engineering, I served as the architect and technical thought leader for engineers organized into Agile scrum teams, whose charters ranged from patient record linkage to ETL platform development and data liquidity and analytics. During my tenure, I led the effort to replace an unwieldy, legacy ETL system with an extensible, metadata-driven framework for multiple clinical and claims archetypes and file formats, including HL7 ADT and Lab messaging, FHIR claims and clinical encounters, x12 claims, CCDA, XML and JSON. The framework leverages reusable, decoupled components modeled on microservice patterns to enable fast onboarding of data pipelines from more than 100 contracted trading partners. Coupled with a robust patient record linkage service and deployed in Azure, the framework is tagged to extend beyond the bounds of the zone charter as a service provider to other athenahealth teams that require patient matching and searching over large data sets for reporting, care management, scheduling, and quality management.

Healthcare Data solution design and architecture including designing and implementing an 837 EDI parser and SQL-based archive and re-hydration engine of the raw data, Master Data Management and de-duping infrastructure, Operational Data Store, ETL and Replication Staging Hub, modern reporting infrastructure, Enterprise Data Warehouse design. Most work in SQL Server 2016 stack, with optimized workarounds for integration with legacy databases.

Solution design and then-modern architecture utilizing advanced TSQL, SSIS, SSRS, SharePoint, and C#. Special emphasis on healthcare master data management and data quality management, analytics, business intelligence, and ASO processing.

As a managing member of a Microsoft Gold Partner consulting enterprise, for each contract, I was called upon to quickly absorb new domains, identify SMEs, negotiate with management, and then serve in at least one – but usually several – roles, including solution architect, analyst, team lead, hands-on developer, integrator, and technical writer. Clients: PacificSource Health Plans, Oregon Beverage Recycling Co-op, Medinex, Pentamation Pharmacy Systems, Blackwell’s Books, AMS (now Vertafore), Dave’s Killer Bread, and various smaller clients.

Co-founder of a grass roots organization that is 100% parent run. I am gratified that the groundwork and infrastructure we had established when I (the last of the founders) stepped down from the board several years ago has proven sustainable. Now in its 17th year and second "generation" of K-12 students, the OSCF is thriving, with claim to producing multiple national champions.

Hands-on management position in a small start-up included assembling, training, leading, and participating on teams to build an Internet-based medical office management system, and an online knowledge management tool.

Rose through the ranks with a software start-up serving the P&C insurance industry. The company grew from a dozen employees to more than 100, when it was acquired by a large competitor mid-way through my tenure. Job titles/duties included CBT developer, technical support manager, programming manager, sales consultant, and branch Executive VP. All were hands-on positions that centered around an insurance agency management system. Represented the company for speaking engagements, conventions, and user training and symposiums.
