Vp, Optimization & Analytics ServicesRecordsone Sep 2015 - Sep 2019Naples, Florida, UsMy familiarity with RecordOne began when I was an HIM DIrector and I selected them as our transcription vendor (they were previously known as Bayscribe). The day of go-live I was on the phone with the CEO of the company while he was making custom adjustments to the application for our physicians. I remember thinking how they really made it seem like anything was possible, in a short amount of time and I had never experienced that level of support from a vendor before or since.Remember Victor Kiam, the guy who liked the shaver so much he bought the company? Well, I liked the company so much, I knew I wanted to work for them someday. For four years, I had the immense pleasure of creating technology-based solutions for many of the problems and pain points I faced on the front lines as a hospital administrator. I also translated the feedback I got from users into technical specifications and requirements for new product features and enhancements. I designed analytics and dashboards that allowed clients to get the information they put into our tool back out in a format that doesn't require an advanced degree in data science. -
Regional Manager, Clinical Documentation Improvement/CodingSutter Health Apr 2012 - Oct 2015Sacramento, California, UsI led a "home-grown" CDI program at 7 acute care campuses during an EPIC implementation and the ICD-10 transition. It was a priority to align our CDI efforts with not just improving CMI, but also quality outcomes like mortality, readmissions, HACs, PSIs, and other reported complications. We improved KPI performance and added staff and also created expanded roles and settings for the documentation specialists. It was important for me as an HIM professional to build a collaborative team of both nurses and coders to meet department goals. CDI was responsible for providing all of the ICD-10 physician education in both the inpatient and outpatient settings for our region. Based on feedback from our physicians, I created custom modules and materials that were then shared across the system. I took an active role in system efforts to standardize CDI processes across 5 regions. I developed and implemented electronic physician query templates in our region that were shared across the system. I represented CDI interests on the system sepsis task force, system LEAN initiative to improve coding quality, and the system Acute Coding Operational Resource Network (ACORN) -
Him DirectorOroville Hospital Aug 2009 - Nov 2012UsWhen I was trusted with a department that my predecessor had led for four decades, I knew that I was going to hear the phrase "but we've always done it that way" a lot. It was imperative I learn how to effectively manage change. Here I was able to grow exponentially as an HIM professional, and was given the freedom to create and innovate. For example, I needed to quadruple my coding staff but there was a shortage of experienced, credentialed coders. So, I started a training camp for those who were interested; and when the conference room was booked, we met in my living room.I implemented a CDI and physician education program without consultants or software vendors, with the support of corporate compliance we brought RAC appeals back in-house, we implemented an observation program, and found ways to integrate utilization review and care management processes into HIM roles. Did I mention there were also implementations of a new transcription system, new encoder, and a transition from paper to electronic medical records?I once had a consultant introduce herself to me as a "recovering HIM director" and now I understand why. We truly are a part of everything that happens in a healthcare organization and it really never leaves you. -
