I began Primary teacher training in September of 2019 at the University of East London, choosing Special Educational Needs as my specialism. This decision was based on my first-hand experience and a passion for SEN and a great interest in its wider application in primary schools; both in mainstream and specialist provision. My most recent teaching role is Year 5 in a mainstream academy, and in my NQT year I was placed in Year 4. During this period, I have significantly developed my understanding of KS2 teaching, as well as how to successfully manage a classroom independently. I have collaborated with my colleagues to plan a range of subjects, including English, Science, Geography, Computing, RE and more. I have some level 1 BSL knowledge, as well as an understanding of how to use sign-supported English and Makaton to support pupils with their learning. At the beginning of my second year, I began an initiative to introduce BSL into the school and encourage staff and pupils to learn the language. It has been received extremely positively and has raised awareness of how learning can be made more accessible across the school. Having taught extensively over my training I am confident that I can teach in a classroom setting using effective teaching and assessment strategies in KS1 and KS2. I also have several practical SEN based skills including Makaton and some BSL, I am familiar with Team Teach and PECS, and attended safe handling training during my first teacher training placement. I thrive on making a difference, and fully commit to any role that I am assigned to. I believe that all children, regardless of needs, have a right to a high-quality education.
