Hi! I work in the Albert B. Alkek Library, at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. If I'm on LinkedIn, it is because I am desperately trying to differentiate an author. Differentiate, you say. What does that mean? It means I need more than your name. Do you have ANY idea how many authors there are in library databases? A very great many. And just because you were named after your maternal grandfather doesn't mean that there aren't tens to hundreds of other published authors with YOUR EXACT NAME. My plea: if you're an author, make sure your publisher includes your birth year in the publication data on the copyright page. And other identifying data if your birth year conflicts with another author. Like your complete middle name--initials are not enough.And if not, well, don't complain to me when your work is A) attributed via authority file to someone else, B) not linked to "your" name in a library catalog, or C) not linked to any author at all, since there is no information to be found about who you are, what your subject area is, or any other sort of differentiating information.It's up to you to make sure you can be found, and your authorship FIRMLY established for ALL YOUR TITLES.End of line.
