Amy Hutton is a Professor Boston College’s Carroll School of Management. Prior to joining BC, she was on the faculty at the Tuck School of Business Administration and at the Harvard Business School. Professor Hutton has a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Rochester. Her research areas include: methods for detecting earnings management, stock price crash risk, empirical assessments of valuation methods, effective corporate disclosure strategies and corporate governance, policy changes in response to Regulation Fair Disclosure and Sarbanes-Oxley, and the roles of capital market intermediaries and regulators in determining market values of company stocks. Her most recent publication examines the role of social media in corporate disclosure. As a result of her research on the conflict of interests facing sell-side analysts, Professor Hutton was named to the 2001 Congressional Review Board, opining on the Securities Industry Association’s “best practices for equity research.” Her research was used in the development of the Global Analyst Research Settlement: https://www.sec.gov/news/speech/factsheet.htm. In 2010, Professor Hutton won the Distinguished Contributions to Accounting Literature Award for her ‘Groundbreaking Research” demonstrating how strong corporate governance combats earnings management. In 2003, she was elected to the Board of Directors of Bandag, Inc., where she serves on the Audit and Governance and Nominating Committees, and in 2005, she was appointed chairman of the Audit Committee. As a board member she actively participated in several merger negotiations, as well as the implementation of Sarbanes-Oxley. With over 20,000 Google Scholar citations, Professor Hutton’s work has appeared in top accounting and finance journals. She served as an Editor for The Accounting Review from 2011-2014; she continued to serve on its Editorial Review Board.
