I am always happiest when I am on the water or surrounded by the beauty of nature – majestic trees, rugged mountain tops, wild rivers and lakes, sandy beaches and brilliant blue oceans. The colors of blue fill my soul. It is no wonder my career began as a park ranger where I discovered my love of teaching. Following 28 years of teaching, I returned to my roots by starting a local environmental nonprofit, Emerald Keepers. Emerald Keepers is the only grassroots, non-profit organization in the City of Coronado whose sole purpose is to address local needs related to environmental stewardship and sustainability. Increasing levels of trash and pollution of our waterways and air threaten the well-being of residents, the economic success of our city, and our children’s future. Emerald Keepers provides ecologically focused leadership to foster awareness, provide a forum for discussion and debate, and promote achievable solutions. Emerald Keepers’ community-based programs and educational outreach encourage community involvement while fostering pride in Coronado. Emerald Keepers goal for Coronado? To protect precious ecosystems and become a model city of sustainability so future generations can love Coronado as much as we do. Applying skills as an educator, administrator, and hands-on leader, I have taken Emerald Keepers from concept to a highly effective, well-respected, influential organization. The San Diego Business Journal named me a Nonprofit Board Leader of Influence for 2024. When I am not working, you can find me paddling outrigger canoes, snorkeling and diving in warmer waters, walking my 125-pound dog, and reading scientific journals and articles about climate and sustainability.
