Research summary: EpsG is a protein essential for the function of the Type II secretion system of Vibrio Cholerae. This system secretes virulence factors such as cholera toxin, proteases, chitinase, lipase, and a protein required for adhesion to gut epithelium. EpsG subunits are considered to assemble into pilus-like structures in the periplasm and either close and open the outer membrane pore for secretion or actively push secreted proteins through the pore. EspG mutants were constructed and tested for their ability to complement a deletion epsG mutant in its ability to secrete proteases. Two mutant classes were detected, those that encode functional EpsG proteins and those that encode non-functional proteins. My research focused on functional analysis of these mutants. Show less
