Gis Specialist

Fairbanks, Ak

As part of the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program, I assisted tsunami researchers by developing and updating integrated topographic and bathymetric digital elevation models. This work involved sourcing and manipulating a wide variety of data sets in order to create a seamless model with the highest resolution and best data available. Knowledge of Alaska data resources, tidal datums and advanced geospatial processing techniques were key to the success of this effort. I published the details and results of this work through the Alaska Division of Geological & Geophysical Surveys. Also completed a project which sought to determine pedestrian evacuation times from tsunami hazard zones. I traveled to several small coastal communities to gather data and interview local leaders and community members about current evacuation plans. I used the USGS Pedestrian Evacuation Tool for ArcMap to generate maps depicting time to safety. I also assisted researchers and outreach efforts at the Alaska Earthquake Center (AEC) by providing general GIS and cartographic services, and creating maps and figures for presentations and publications. As the AEC GIS Specialist, I provided expertise on Geospatial software selection, use and maintenance, as well as sourcing geospatial data and manipulating it to suit the needs of the individual project.

Gis Analyst

Singapore

As a GIS Analyst for the Earth Observatory of Singapore, I filled the role of GIS subject matter expert. I assisted the research staff with geospatial tasks including but not limited to; GIS and Digital Image Processing software selection and training, data acquisition, geospatial analysis techniques and cartographic needs. For example, I created movie files showing volcanic flows over time, generated elevation surfaces from field survey data and produced maps for publication and outreach. I also developed a workflow for researchers in remote field locations to review their daily data collection efforts, as well as previously collected data. This solved the issue of not being able to access ESRI licenses remotely and improved the planning process for site surveying.I also worked very closely with the Education and Outreach Group, assisting with data sourcing and curriculum development focused on GIS in the undergraduate classroom. A separate project to implement ArcGIS Online as a learning tool was tested at a local secondary school, during which I provided data, software training and feedback based on preliminary tests gauging the success of the pilot project. Some of the other tasks and duties associated with this position were: maintenance and administration of the ESRI and ENVI site licenses as well as the EOS ArcGIS Online account, making presentations to the public and attending events to promote ongoing research at EOS, and organizing and digitizing the vast library of paper maps held by the research group. Working with very little supervision, I was able to enhance the GIS capabilities of the institute and contribute to a wide variety of projects and publications in progress
