From a young age, I always knew that I wanted to go to college and to help people. Being a child of Indian immigrants means that a lot of expectations were placed on me. Unlike some Indian girls, who were expected to make themselves into the best potential wives, my maternal grandfather and my parents only had one mantra: get yourself an education. My grandfather instilled in my mother, who would later do the same to me, that getting an education, specifically a college degree, will provide one with a plethora of opportunities.Despite clinging to this ideal my whole life, I had no clue how I wanted to use my college education for my future. I was chosen to participate in a STEM-themed pre-orientation program and later selected to serve as a Mentor in the program. For the remaining 3 years of my time in college, I was hired to introduce students to resources and advice for their college career and life after college, especially for STEM-focused students. Because of the variety of teaching positions I pursued during college, I thought I could satisfy this urge to help students reach their potential by becoming an elementary educator. While teaching is definitely a fulfilling profession, I wasn’t reaching students the way I knew I could. I now want to explore how to guide and advocate for both students and adults because my time in the workforce as an independent adult has shown me how hard it is without that village around you. I also miss the interactive guiding and advising I had with some college opportunities. The purpose of pursuing an education (point A) is to help that person reach a more financially sustainable future (point B). For the past few years, I have been helping people at point A, but there doesn’t seem to be much support when connecting people from point A to point B. In order to prepare myself to be the best career and college counselor, I am pivoting into HR and Talent Acquisition. That way, I can dabble in different industries while comprehending the hiring processes within those fields. While it may be unconventional to hire a teacher, I would love to talk with you on how my skills transfer into the private sector and make me an asset for your company.
