During my time as Director of LearningWorks Afterschool, the afterschool and summer programs have grown from a single site serving 40 students/year, to its current level of 11 elementary school sites across 4 districts, serving just under 800 students/year. I have developed strong relationships with the districts and schools we partner with, providing academic enrichment programming for 2nd – 5th grade students who are not performing at grade level in reading and/or math. In 2011, we changed our programming philosophy and structure from a focus on homework help & enrichment to a more intentional focus and time on STEM & enrichment. We developed an afterschool program that engages students in relevant hands on engineering projects where students are developing academic vocabulary and background knowledge while gaining confidence and increased engagement in learning. Within this structure, we intentionally focus on problem solving, collaboration, communication, and creative thinking skills.
