When I was a kid, we moved around a lot. In fact, I changed schools five times in elementary school, three times in middle school, and twice in high school. These moves were throughout Texas, out west to California, back to Texas, and then north to Pennsylvania. When this little factoid comes up, folks usually ask if I grew up in a military family. I did not. To say this life experience was formative is an understatement. I remember walking up to my fifth school on the first day. It was midway through my third-grade year, and I had a feeling of dread in the pit of my stomach at having to do this “new kid” thing again. For any who have done it, you know what I mean. But then a realization swept over my little eight-year-old self and the eternal optimist in me roared. I had already done this so many times! I knew how to make friends; I was good at meeting new people. And I still am to this day. Growing up in a family of artists, it wasn’t a huge surprise I would also be creative. The result of one of those ten moves landed me in an affluent high school with an extremely well-appointed art wing. As a freshman I was lucky enough to discover sculpture, and I spent every moment I could for the next three and a half years – not just art class, but tutorials, and a get-out-of-gym pass – in the studio of this school. I ultimately went on to earn my BFA in Studio Art from the University of Texas at Austin. In the work I do, I blend connection and creativity every moment of every day. I thrive on making connections with new people everywhere I go. I love asking questions and getting the little nuggets of detail that transform a stranger into a friend. I model this daily for my four sons because, some days, human connection feels like a lost art, especially when we’re all glued to our cell phones. I go out of my way to make the new person walking into the room feel comfortable. I learned early on that I “turn the frown upside down” with the way that I show up. I pride myself on my ability to build trust through authenticity and humility. I peel back the layers of the onion to understand what works and what doesn’t. I solve operational issues with innovation and heart.
