In this role, I managed the financial aspects of the IT department, and was trusted to run a $100 million budget. My department also tracked vendor efficiencies, and controlled budgeting and forecasting. Two government acts drove many of the department’s business practices: The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), which ensures the privacy and security provisions for safeguarding medical records and other identifiable health information; and the Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) Act, which ensures shareholders and the general public are protected from error and fraud relating to the accuracy of corporate disclosures.As the company’s HIPAA security officer and SOX Manager, I was responsible for ensuring strict observance of these acts.
