  • Afn Network+
    Champion - Behaviour Change
    Afn Network+ Jan 2024 - Present
The six Champions for 2024 will bring a wealth of expertise spanning the agri-food system, from hands-on farming to wider industry, academia and the public sector. The Champions play a key role in supporting AFN's mission of identifying key research gaps that may be holding the UK food system back from transitioning towards a net zero UK by 2050. Drawing on their expertise and knowledge, the Champions will build their own networks, centred around their respective theme (mine of which is Behaviour Change). They will run engagement activities with the aim of seeking and synthesising ideas and thinking around the drive towards achieving net zero by 2050. Crucially, they will map the research and innovation landscape, within their theme as well as across others, identifying critical knowledge and activity gaps that need addressing. My own consultancy reflects my core principle: reputation needs to reflect reality. This has helped me develop a name for strategic and results-driven reputation management and crisis & issues resolution, for clients across agribusiness and industry. Evidence has always been important in this work, but even more so now with social and behavioural science underpinning all Oxtale's projects.

As the Communications member of the Board for two full terms, I helped RFS clarify its vision and communications focus, and identify its key audiences. RFS is a brilliant educational charity that has huge potential to support increased carbon sequestration from trees by improving skills in people and the resilience of our woodlands.

  • Milk Development Council (Now Part Of Ahdb)
    Head Of Communications
Milk Development Council (Now Part Of Ahdb) Jul 2004 - Dec 2008
MDC was an industry levy board delivering essential services for UK dairy farmers; it has since been subsumed into AHDB. This was an in-house role aimed at defending the reputation of the dairy industry and driving greater uptake of levy-funded services by producers. I led a team which secured extensive main-stream national media coverage on selected issues, and a 50% uplift in trade media presence. I also implemented ‘evaluable’ communications initiatives which doubled the levy-payers rating the organisation positively to reach 70%, and quadrupled recognition of ‘services of value’, to 60%.
