About Amy Barkhaus
I'm a highly educated scholar of literary studies, specializing in both canonical texts and the genre of Fantasy, with advanced research and analytical skills. As a writer I am eloquent and insightful, accomplished in both the art of fiction and poetry. Furthermore, I am a practiced editor of fictional works. My first Bachelor's degree is in Psychology, with a minor in Creative Writing from University of Arizona. My professional experience began in the Behavioral Health field, and though it is my nature to guide and teach, I have realigned my career path with my ultimate passion for Literature and Creative Writing. My particular areas of concentration, and movements I love best, are Romanticism, Victorian novels, the Golden Age of Children's Literature and the Fantasy genre. I obtained a second Bachelor's in English from Arizona State University, graduating with a 4.0 GPA. Since then I worked as a Library Assistant with Phoenix Public Libraries, and specialized in advanced reference services and early literacy programming. Also during this juncture, I was nationally selected to participate in Arizona State University's Your Novel Year programme. This intensive, year long programme was taught by published, established authors and encompassed all aspects of the novel writing process, weekly workshopping, and in-depth manuscript editing, and publication. Recently, I have completed my Master of Letters in Fantasy Literature at the University of Glasgow--- an internationally unique degree programme. I am seeking a career in the literary domain, where my unique background is a creative asset.

Library Assistant
At the library, one of my essential duties is providing reference and research assistance to our patrons. Whether a person is seeking a particular novel, books by a specific author, a genre they like, or need literature on a certain subject matter, I can help them find it. The other essential function of my position is developing and implementing educational, interactive programs that promote literacy. This includes putting together book displays that highlight and cater to interests in certain literary genres. For literary events, it comprises developing interactive activities for families that are creative and fun. Literary events are a way of providing a tangible lure for the wonderful worlds to be found through stories and literature. I am also responsible for the creation of Storytimes that promote early literacy in children. We use rhyme, music, and picture books to involve children and their parents in the educational and joyful process of learning to read, knowledge acquisition, and active listening. I officially manage our teen volunteers at the library. I regulate their application process, write their schedule, and monitor their hours, however they are responsible for documenting their hours volunteered. In turn, the teens learn about the ins and outs of the library system, and assist in the sorting department. They also help prepare for special programs, as well as supervise the subsequent activities. Teens also have the opportunity to develop and implement their own programs at the library based on their interests and talents.
