As a Fellow, I designed and developed case studies, policy research, and publications to help catalyze enduring, transformative change.𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀𝗔 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝗹 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 & 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸. Supported by The Century Foundation to create “A New New Deal,” a Cornell University Press bestseller, taught in 50+ college and university classrooms, and translated to Japanese in 2017.𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗖𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁. Commended by Former President of the Century Foundation, Richard C Leone, on behalf of TCF’s Trustees, for developing a labor union model “that is simply too good to ignore." 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄In 2005, I co-founded Building Partnerships USA (BPUSA) alongside Anthony Thigpenn (Executive Director, AGENDA/SCOPE). Our vision was to leverage a peer-based partnership model to fuel leadership development, civic participation, and coalition building. Within a few years, the organization evolved from a whiteboard concept to a non-profit training program with regional/national impact.𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗩𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 & 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴. Developed a comprehensive concept paper, presented a national leadership development blueprint, and secured seed capital for BPUSA of $500,000, which served as a launchpad for organizational growth.𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗺 & 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. Designed and created a training institute, which increased the skills and networks of 3,000+ community/elected leaders in 10+ cities across the United States. 𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄Concurrent with my leadership at South Bay AFL-CIO, I conceived Working Partnerships USA (WPUSA), an NPO dedicated to rebuilding the links between economic policy and community wellbeing (regionally and nationally). I wrote its business plan, secured investors, and launched an organization with the capacity to weigh in on larger national issues beyond labor union reach. In my time as Director, we achieved trailblazing victories in healthcare, housing, and transportation. WPUSA grew into a $4MM organization and is still operational today, 25 years after inception.𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀• 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝗻, 𝗔𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝟯𝟬 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲. Co-led first campaign to bring health coverage to 160,000+ children in Santa Clara County; laid the legislative foundation for and initiated the nation's first universal health care insurance plan. Healthcare initiative was adopted in 30+ counties across the United States.• 𝗖𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗮'𝘀 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗟𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗮𝗴𝗲. Championed the enactment of San Jose's first living wage ordinance governing public contracts; increased San Jose's minimum wage 25%—including cost of living adjustments—and secured the highest wage in California.• 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻'𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁 𝗔𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀. Brokered passage of groundbreaking community benefits ordinance; linked land use decisions and public funds expenditures, to standards of community wellbeing, e.g., affordable housing, living wage jobs, open space, as a condition of land use.

𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄In 1996, I was appointed by National AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney to chair the AFL-CIO National Advisory Council on State and Local Bodies. As National Chair, I reimagined labor's strategy city-by-city across the country. In the process, I played a key role in retooling, repositioning, and revitalizing the labor movement at the state and regional level.𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀• 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗮 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴. Chaired 23-person team of peers and remapped labor's agenda from an exclusive interest in workplace issues, to a broader focus on regional economic development issues in communities nationwide (e.g., housing, transportation, land use, job creation, education reform).• 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗔𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻. Impelled identification of innovation opportunities, influenced reorganization efforts, and fueled change at grassroots levels; helped integrate national priorities with state and local labor communities.

𝗣𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄Early in my career, I was elected to serve as President & CEO of the South Bay AFL-CIO Labor Council (Silicon Valley). South Bay AFL-CIO is the 15th-largest regional labor federation in the country representing 90 unions and 110,000 members. In this role, I elevated labor's position in Silicon Valley economic development circles and civic organizations. I was successful in electing labor majorities for state, county, and municipal elections, and negotiated collective bargaining agreements for working people in spaces as diverse as the public sector, construction, health care, and service trades. Also, I experimented with building union representation for workers under non-standard labor arrangements.𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀• 𝟯𝗫 𝗕𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲, 𝟰𝗫 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 & 𝟮𝟱+ 𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀. Achieved 300% growth in annual budget and 400% increase in staff. Orchestrated regional political action initiatives and spearheaded advocacy campaigns that generated 25+ policy reforms (city, county, state).• 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗴𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝘀 “𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗜𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗼𝗻 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆” 𝗯𝘆 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙔𝙤𝙧𝙠 𝙏𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨. After being elected as the first woman and youngest person to lead a major metropolitan labor federation, named "one of the most innovative figures in Silicon Valley" by the 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘠𝘰𝘳𝘬 𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘴.
