I teach in the Comparative Media Studies/Writing program at MIT and am the co-founder of Black Notes Project, a Charlotte, NC-based music festival + nonprofit with the mission of celebrating and amplifying Black American Music. I am also on the board of BAMS Fest, an interdisciplinary arts nonprofit whose mission is to break down racial and social barriers to arts, music, and culture across Greater Boston. My academic research focuses on online communities as well as the intersection of race and digital culture. Outside of academia, my essays and articles have also appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Boston Globe, The Charlotte Observer, The Atlantic, New York Magazine, The LA Review of Books, Al Jazeera, NPR, and others.Both a music lover and advocate for knowledge equity, I am currently bridging my personal and academic interests by collaborating on a series of multi-city community outreach projects that use music as a vehicle to empower a more diverse editor base for Wikipedia and address content gaps on the encyclopedia. I am also working on a book about Prince fan culture.
