Leads strategy for development of high-performance occupancy detection systems for smart buildings and energy conservation.

Developed fully-automated sample-to-answer instruments and disposable cartridges for molecular diagnostics in low-resource settings. Developed plate format multiplexed T1D auto-antibody assay. Led and directed an R&D team of 18 including molecular biologists, chemists, biophysicists, and microfluidic, chemical, electrical, mechanical, biomedical, and optical engineers to develop the EOSCAPE product line.

Drove development of company’s first controlled build of a cardiovascular monitoring device. • Managed design, manufacturing, design control documents, quality systems, verification and validation, and IRB approval for a device used in clinical studies for product development. Directed pivotal clinical study: prepared protocol, selected study site and staff, and oversaw 160-subject study, managed monitoring and statistical analysis, authored clinical study report.

Developed a portfolio of radar-based non-contact respiratory measurement devices. Led development of the Kai RSpot, which is the first FDA-cleared respiratory rate spot check device, and the first FDA-cleared Doppler-radar-based physiological monitoring device.

The Drug Device R&D Group at ALZA was developing iontophoretic transdermal drug delivery devices, including IONSYS, a transdermal patient-controlled analgesia device. While at ALZA, Amy developed devices for clinical and preclinical studies of iontophoretic drug delivery, studied feasibility of integration of sensors with drug-delivery systems, and evaluated electrical systems for next generation drug delivery devices, including hospital IT systems, medical device connectivity, patient safety, and abuse deterrence.

Amy's dissertation work focused on non-contact measurement of heartbeat and respiration with a single-chip CMOS Doppler radar. Similar systems used in the past used bulky, heavy, expensive components which aren't practical for home or hospital monitoring. By leveraging cutting-edge wireless technology, single-chip radar transceivers can be built inexpensively. These low-cost transceivers cause some problems that weren’t seen with the high quality, expensive transceivers that were used in the past, and Amy's dissertation research involved finding ways to solve these problems so the small, lightweight, low-cost radar transceivers can replace the big, heavy, expensive transceivers formerly used for this application.
