After a COVID-induced hiatus, our small but determined nonprofit is growing our board, collaborating with like-minded organizations and finding our place, nearly 40 years after our founding, in a dynamic, more diverse city and county.

Community engagement, strategic problem solving and reputation management were at the heart of my work. My constituents included homeowners, student-renters, landlords, city officials, small businesses and district councils. Our mutual goal: to sustain an inclusive, safe and economically thriving neighborhood.

My 14-person team supported the strategic plan with our digital and print work for prospective students, alumnae, donors and neighbors. And we engaged in brand-building partnerships with the Minneapolis YWCA, Twin Cities Business magazine and the Minnesota Women's Economic Roundtable.

My proudest achievement was building a creative team of young professionals; my greatest learning was working with Vice President Jan McDaniel to brand and market an institution that was quiet about its quality. Having been a fast-moving journalist, I had to learn to pay attention to process and practice patience.

Wrote and edited for Mpls.St.Paul and Twin Cities Business magazines. My favorite projects: profiles of Laurie Coleman ("Model Wife"), married to then-Senator Norm Coleman (R-Minn.); former WCCO-TV anchorwoman Pat Miles and her multiple eye surgeries; and “Women and Money” educator Ruth Hayden.

My award-winning column, "Women in Business," later morphed into "On Balance: Issues That Affect Work and Home" and resulted in numerous speaking invitations to corporate women's groups. For three years, once with baby and toddler in tow, I rode my bike and wrote about TRAM (The Ride Across Minnesota).

Editing a twice-weekly paper with modest resources in a literate, education-focused, two-college town was a noble experiment. We increased our focus on local schools, upped our profiles and feature stories, and did our best to appeal to both wings of "town and gown."

My mentor Deb Hopp brought me in to remake this shopper into a vibrant weekly for the neighborhood of downtown Minneapolis: business owners, executives and employees, and the growing population of downtown residents. Our team helped increase circulation, relevance and ad revenue.

As an eager young writer-editor, I copy edited, wrote and assigned stories and served as a section editor. The magazine was solely for Minnesota Public Radio members, and we fancied ourselves The Atlantic of the Midwest. Then we went out on newsstands and had to think about marketability.

I became managing editor of the Twin Cities Reader, an arts-and-entertainment weekly, upon graduating from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Arts in English and women's studies. I transitioned to CityBusiness as a staff editor and writer when the parent company launched that publication.
