Higher Education Reporter
CurrentI look at who is getting to and through Cleveland’s three biggest colleges, along with what challenges and supports they encounter along the way. How that happens -- and how universities wield their power during that process -- impacts all of the city’s residents as well as our collective future. My work continues to be in partnership with Open Campus. It's a national nonprofit news organization focused on strengthening higher education coverage in local communities.
Higher Education Reporter
I reported on the nearly 30 nonprofit colleges and universities in Northeast Ohio. I wrote longform pieces for Crain's print edition as well as several stories for its website each week. I generated all of my own story ideas. I continually worked to grow and diversify my network of sources, with a big focus on connecting with college students. My position was in partnership with the national nonprofit news organization Open Campus.
Reporter/Producer
I reported, identified experts/voices, conducted interviews, wrote scripts and edited video pieces (typically 2-3 minutes in length) from conception to completion. These pieces aired on Newsy's website and cable channel. I used Adobe Premiere in this role.I kept close tabs on the 2020 campaign cycle and the latest political news. And in light of the coronavirus pandemic, I also transitioned to the national education beat, filing both K-12 and higher education stories.
Producer, Washington Week
A sampling of my wide-ranging slate of my responsibilities included contributing to editorial meetings to guide the show, booking and pre-interviewing reporters, managing social media platforms, compiling weekly analytics reports, and creating various forms of digital content. For several months, I also oversaw production of video elements for the live television broadcast. In this role, I used Drupal CMS and edited in Adobe Premiere. I first joined the Washington Week team as an associate producer in 2017.
Digital Projects Producer
In a deadline-driven, breaking news environment, I wrote stories for the station's website, shared content on social media platforms, sent push alerts, helped develop longform digital projects, and occasionally appeared on television newscasts. I developed social listening skills while using tools like Chartbeat and Crowdtangle. This role included using the Lakana CMS platform and Edius video editor.
Reporter
I reported on the state of education in Ohio as part of the StateImpact Ohio project. I produced both breaking news spots and in-depth features that aired on Ohio Public Radio stations (primarily Cleveland's WCPN, Kent's WKSU, and Columbus' WOSU) . My work won two Society of Professional Journalism awards and appeared on the PBS NewsHour and NPR.org. I also ran an accompanying blog, which featured aggregated content along with original work. I used Excel spreadsheets to create several searchable, statewide databases. I ran all of StateImpact's social media accounts.Occasionally, I appeared on the television show ideas, along with the radio call-in show The Sound of Ideas, to talk about topical education issues. I also contributed voiceover packages for the children's television show NewsDepth.
