Recruited by firm ownership to lead the organization forward with strategic initiatives, new client acquisition, innovation, modernization needs, and complete independence from the predecessor firm, the Chief Operating Officer role was created to bring me on board. I led a collaborative initiative to develop strategic objectives and evaluate the impact and relevancy of those objectives as the market evolved.During my time with the firm, we created and adopted mission and vision statements to ground and inspire the workforce. Core values were developed to guide decision-making. To provide a platform for professional development, I conceptualized Vault University, which was brought to life through a multi-level task force. This work has made it possible for the firm to expand service offerings and increase its position in the market, leading to dramatic increases in KPIs. In addition to my responsibilities for the firm, I became actively involved in the nonprofit and association community as a board member, thought leader, mentor to women, and public speaker.

The Vice President of Finance & Administration post was created specifically for me. The organization had grown in size and complexity due to efforts to deepen the impact of sports-based youth development programs focused on underserved communities across the United States. After four years as an outsourced CFO, I joined the Foundation’s full-time team to implement technology and processes. These accomplishments would provide a solid framework to support the execution of the mission and ensure the success of fundraising efforts and grant applications.

My clients were focused on the non-profit, manufacturing, and technology sectors. A former college soccer player, the cultivation and addition of the U.S. Soccer Foundation as a client was another career highlight.

Doesn’t every CPA leave a role in accounting and finance to take an entry-level position in sales? My time on the sales floor was completely different from my previous professional experience. The perspectives I gained on personalities, goal achievement, sales targets, CRM, and learning to focus my energy on activities that will most efficiently and effectively lead to results still contribute to my approach to those items today. Toward the end of my time in this role, I received awards for most homes sold, the highest sales revenue, and JD Power customer satisfaction scores for the Northern Virginia division.

The exposure I gained as a member of those pilot groups during my Assistant Controller tenure led to my selection for promotion to Controller of the Northern Virginia division. During my time in this role, the division ranked first in units closed and in the top 3 for revenue out of 50+ U.S. divisions. My role was heavily operations-focused, vs. strictly accounting and finance. Land acquisition was a competitive process for homebuilders, and providing forecasting and financial acumen as a business partner to our leadership teams was a large part of where I spent my time.

Moving to industry from public accounting was a natural career progression. In the early 2000s, the housing sector was hot. The accounting and finance functions of this top five U.S. homebuilder were transitioning from traditional paper processes to internally developed tech platforms. I was invited to participate in software development and testing pilot groups for budgeting and forecasting, financial reporting, and land acquisition proformas.

GSSM (Gleiberman, Spears, Shepherd, and Menaker), a regional public accounting firm, was growing rapidly when I joined. That growth offered vast opportunities for learning both technical and leadership skills, unlike what was typical for a Senior Auditor. Working on clients primarily in the non-profit and manufacturing sectors gave me a baseline of knowledge and passion I still carry today. Grant Thornton acquired GSSM in early 2002 to expand their footprint into the Charlotte market.

Achieving the goal of securing an early offer from a Big 4 firm during my senior year of college remains a career highlight. My time at KPMG provided a springboard for success, and I maintain relationships with several former colleagues. Unfortunately, my time with KPMG was cut short due to a sizeable RIF during my first year with the firm. However, that RIF proved to be one of the best events, both personally and professionally, as it motivated me to move to Charlotte, NC, while remaining in public accounting.
