It’s my mom’s fault I’m in this mess—and by “mess” I mean being a creative for a living. If she hadn’t suggested halfway through my college career that I’d make a good journalist, I’d probably be doing something respectable now. Like helping people open checking accounts. Or working customer service at a health insurance company. So honestly, thank goodness for my mom. Because just the idea of those jobs has me falling asleep. And being a creative is messy, but that’s also what makes it fun. It’s emailing your colleague 25 times in a row because you just had an idea that’s so exciting you can’tstoptalkingoryou’lldie. It’s boldly saying your cringiest ideas out loud because sometimes crappy ideas can serve as fertilizer for brilliant ones. It’s that feeling when you’re in the zone and the work is pouring out of you and it feels on the verge of coming alive, like you don’t know what’s going to happen next but you just can't wait to find out.I didn’t become a journalist (those hours were not my jam) but thanks to my mom’s offhand comment, I discovered what I’m truly good at—storytelling. Whether it’s a webpage about a service offering, a video about a customer success story, or a simple email about how you can save 15% on your next purchase, I’m going to tell the heck out of that story. I’m going to dig into every aspect of it, from the minutest detail to the 30,000-foot-view, and I’m going to craft a piece of content that’s on brand, on strategy, and grammatically perfect. But more than that, I'm going to make people feel things. Because, ultimately, my job as a storyteller is to make people care. (Five points if I make them laugh; 10 points if they cry.)Go ahead and take a minute to peruse my page. If you like what you see, drop a note—let’s have a conversation. In the meantime, I’m going to go thank my mom for helping steer me toward this crazy, messy, insanely beautiful path. (I bet she’ll cry.)
