Helped to develop a future-ready skills-based curriculum spanning 12 grades and covering topics, such as practical skills, technology, environmental issues, history, and the arts. The course was designed in English and aimed at learners from around the world, however, the content focused on developing skills in critical thinking, global citizenship and emotional intelligence, as opposed to English grammar skills explicitly.

Worked as an online ESL teacher for young students based in China aged between 6 and 12 years old. Classes generally had between 12 and 25 students. We managed larger classes using virtual groups and staging. Classes were often accompanied by an array of props, costumes, and flashcards. I also learned how to use Manycam to make my classes more interactive.

Ferrara, Emilia-Romagna, Italy

Worked as a travelling ESL teacher around the various campuses of the University of Ferrara, among them; medicine, engineering, architecture, and languages. Sessions ranged from small classes of first-year undergraduates to large halls of 50+ PhD candidates. Invigilated and marked many of the final exams, with each exam consisting of 50-100 students. Whilst working, I was also sponsored by the management at the Ferrara branch to complete a face-to-face NILE course in English for Academic Purposes with a focus on science and technology, which included 6 hours of group class time. With this course, I learned how to structure and organise English courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students, adapt and use academic text for teaching specific language, and design speaking, reading and writing activities that bolstered the students’ English proficiency in their subject matter.

Taught mainly elementary and intermediate 10-week intensive courses to classes of 15-20 students from different nationalities who were studying for vocational, academic, or visa reasons. Invigilated and marked triweekly exams. Organised excursions, class parties, talent shows, and singing classes. Was given additional responsibilities including assessment administration, validation, and development. Whilst working I also achieved my Certificate IV in TESOL with our mother company, Melbourne City Institute of Education.

Worked as an online ESL teacher for young students based in China aged between 6 and 15 years old. Classes were generally 1:1 and often accompanied by props and virtual reward systems. In addition, we were booked to deliver trial classes in between our scheduled classes.

Worked as an ESL teacher for adults from intermediate to advanced level classes in the Guomao EF centre, the largest in Beijing. Wrote daily reports for students in our face-to-face classes. Conducted English life skill classes in the travel category where students organised hypothetical trips to countries around the world. Also delivered a presentation on adult learners who are autistic or learning-impaired at a biannual EF teaching seminar.

Worked as part of an annual community project called Saturday Cool School, which was led by a community samba band I was part of at the time, called Rhythm Wave. Gave singing classes teaching modern and traditional songs in English, Scottish Gaelic, and Portuguese. Assisted with Brazilian samba percussion and dance classes. Helped the students prepare for an end-of-year show featuring singing, drumming, and dancing. One year, the project had a special guest in the form of Nana Vasconcelos, who rehearsed and performed with the children in their final show at Perth Horsecross Concert Hall.

Received extensive and continuous training on, as well as applied practically; first aid, medication application, manual handling, epilepsy emergency medication, personal care, adult protection, child protection, mental health awareness, autism awareness, ADD and ADHD awareness, as well as Romani traveller awareness.
