Research Scientist 2
CurrentWork with senior staff to design and carry out research projects in the Division of Environmental Health Sciences (DEHS) and support mandatory functions for the for the Food and Drug Administration Food Emergency Response Network (FDA FERN) as it relates to emergency response and preparedness. Independently coordinate the pickup and accessioning of lab samples as well as prepare and submit all routine isotopic gamma and charcoal samples. Handle grant-related purchasing needs for the Nuclear Chemistry Laboratory (NCL) and support routine functions of the lab as needed.• Contribute to ongoing research involving the uptake of radionuclides in plantsAssist in the development of efficient extraction methods to optimize the recovery of radionuclides in foods.• Coordinate the retrieval and accessioning of all NCL samples received at the Wadsworth Center. Accession all NCL samples received by accurately completing RFA documents and sample analysis sheets, transcribing information for each sample into CLIMS, and labeling all samples and associated documents accurately for distribution within the NCL. Accurately record all sample information into the NCL access database for in-house tracking. • Prepare and submit all isotopic gamma, charcoal, and air composite samples for the NCL. Precisely weigh all water and composite water samples gravimetrically. Accurately measure milk, sediment, vegetation, and charcoal samples to the appropriate volume. Prepare air composite samples correctly by stacking weekly filters in order and sealing securely avoiding cross-contamination between samples.• Maintain a clean and organized workspace, clean marinellis as needed, and assist with disposal of water, vegetation, sediment, milk, and charcoal samples monthly or as required if space is needed.• Create purchase requests through Health Research Inc.’s (HRI) Workday for all grant-related purchases supporting FERN research activities as needed.
