About Amy Rister

I am an experienced policy professional with the proven ability to achieve major public policy changes through community involvement, stakeholder engagement, influencing elections, and ultimately through legislation. I have spent more than 20 years developing relationships with elected officials, capitol staff, political activists, key public policy stakeholders, and community leaders all across Texas. In addition to my network and having a thorough understanding of the legislative process and campaigns, my ability to develop effective messaging and communication strategies for each candidate or public policy initiative has been paramount to my success.I currently work for State Representative Terry Canales, Chairman of the House Transportation Committee serving as the Committee Director. The House Transportation Committee has oversight of TxDOT, DMV, TTI & the commercial enforcement division of DPS. I have previously served as Chief of Staff for four House members, two republicans and two democrats, as well as Committee Director for the House Defense and Veterans’ Affairs Committee and the House Pensions Committee. I have been fortunate to work for members appointed to influential committees including House Calendars, House Local and Consent Calendars, House Transportation, House Energy Resources, Homeland Security and Public Safety, and the Texas Sunset Commission. Working with leadership as a Committee Director has given me a discerning ability to navigate policy analysis, legislative communication strategies, and the complex legislative process.I began interning at the Texas Capitol at age 16 in the Lieutenant Governor's office. After 4 internships, I began working as a full-time Legislative Assistant at age 20. I became a Chief of Staff at age 24. In addition to eight sessions of experience in the Texas Legislature, I have served as Campaign Manager for several successful legislative races. I was elected by state convention delegates as an alternate delegate to the RNC convention in 2008 at age 20 and remain active in my local YRs & TFRW.I am a graduate of the Republican Party of Texas Campaign School and hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Texas A&M University. I spend weekends studying for my MBA online through Texas A&M Corpus Christi & a Master of Jurisprudence in Energy, Oil and Gas Law through Texas A&M School of Law. I am a member of The Junior League of Austin, Capitol Republican Women, Austin Young Republicans, The Pink Granite Foundation, and Capital City A&M Club. In my spare time you can find me at Westcave.
