Position funded by a Queen's University Belfast spin-out company; pHion Therapeutics Ltd. I was involved in the management of numerous research projects with the focus being the improved delivery of DNA, mRNA, siRNA and small molecules in vitro and in vivo. This role required excellent trouble-shooting and problem-solving skills, and enthusiasm to continuously learn new research skills and techniques.

Northern Ireland

This project aimed to investigate the implications of a novel therapeutic on the prevention and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus. I conducted extensive in vivo studies and performed qRT-PCR for a range of adipogenic and immunogenic genes. ELISA analysis of serum, and adipose tissue immunohistochemistry skills were essential to the completion of this project. Skilled animal handling, exceptional organization and time-management were key to the success of this project. This role required presentation and communication of technical data to funders and commercialization mentors, and preparation of data and text for grant applications. The work I performed during this project was key to securing further funding.

Following completion of my pre-registration training, I registered with the Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland (PSNI) and began working as a locum pharmacist in various community pharmacies across Northern Ireland. I enjoyed the provision of health services to improve patient care, and so continued to work as a locum pharmacist while I undertook my Ph.D. research project. Working as a locum pharmacist required great adaptability, and an eagerness to continue learning and improving patient services. My role as the Responsible Pharmacist enabled development of management and delegation skills.I provided the following services:• Legal and clinical accuracy checking• Dispensing• Repeat dispensing• Extemporaneous dispensing• Substitute dispensing for opioid dependence • Emergency medicine supply, including involvement in the Emergency Supply Pilot Scheme• Smoking cessation• Medicines Use Reviews (MURs)• Oxygen supply

Throughout my Ph.D. I had the opportunity to teach MPharm students in their laboratory classes. I conducted tutorials, and graded in-class and at-home assessments for the professional “Pharmacy Practice” module. Additionally, I explained research principles and supervised laboratory techniques for the “Pharmaceutical Biotechnology” module.

Following completion of my MPharm degree I undertook pharmacist training in the community setting. I was trained in the provision of community pharmacy services including dispensing, smoking cessation, Medicines Use Reviews (MURs) and oxygen supply. Additionally, I had the opportunity to speak with a local community group about the services that pharmacies offer, and how they could better utilise these services to improve their health and well-being.This role allowed me to develop into a conscientious and empathetic pharmacist with a passion for the provision of healthcare services and improved patient care.
