This gave me valuable insight into how businesses generally approach safety – commonly at the level of grudging compliance rather than enthusiasm to manage it.This greatly developed my skills in quickly understanding and assessing the situation and internal dynamics during onsite visits, to then work with clients on the most practical solutions rather than the standard long-winded approaches to safety.I also worked with the Head of Facilities and architects commissioned for the major office relocation project (to move all Melbourne staff from four buildings into one custom-built building), to ensure the building and fitout would comply with safety and ergonomic standards. I was also a part of the large scale consultation and change management program to address and mitigate the psychological effect the change in commute and location would have upon the staff. I then continued as Occupational Health and Safety Advisor for the Royal Children’s and Women’s Hospitals, to ensure the safety of staff and patients across different wards and departments. My focus was on the people risk, particularly to reduce violence for staff through workforce engagement towards risk management for different exposures to violence. I found the risk of human unpredictability incredibly interesting and rewarding to mitigate. I identified core contributing factors to violence, e.g. long waiting times, to build a framework that targeted those core risks.Highlights included:► Established and implemented the ‘Smart Move’ program to eliminate manual lifting and movement of patients.► Reviewed and updated the Emergency Management program.► Engaged in the Occupational Violence Reduction program with regulators and other hospitals.► Violence reduction in the Mental Health Unit (including the Adolescent Mental Health Unit at Footscray).► Exposure to risk across wards and departments, including patient handling and care, Biomedical Engineering new product development, Morgue, Sterilisation, and the Oncology ward for exposure to radiation and chemotherapy drugs for the staff.
