Trainee Counselling Psychologist
Working within a specialist psychotherapy service providing assessment, treatment, and support to individuals with a diverse range of complex emotional difficulties that manifest as physical symptoms. Client primary diagnoses include, functional neurological disorder, dissociative seizure disorder and epilepsy. This also includes working with physical health such as migraines, numbness, dystonia, and diabetes. Clients within this service are complex and experience difficulties associated with complex trauma and significant relational difficulties and had co-morbid diagnoses such as ADHD, ASD and C-PTSD.Part of my role was to engage clients and provide 1-1 psychotherapy to clients to understand the nature of the mind-body relationship and the development of functional symptoms in relation to the nervous system and stress, therefore requiring an ability to communicate effectively complex and emotive information. I utilised a wide range of models such as Transactional Analysis, Psychodynamic Interpersonal Therapy, CBT, CFT, CAT and Somatic Therapy. I also worked collaboratively with individuals and their carers/family members within systematic framework to provide holistic support when exploring the function of symptoms. This has also included working with the client and their families integrating structural family therapy and working within the clients cultural and spiritual belief system.I also worked within an MDT that comprised of psychotherapists, neurologists and nurses.
Trainee Counselling Psychologist
Within this role, I work within an MDT that comprises of psychologists, assistant psychologists, nurses, physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, a consultant in rehabilitation medicine, a GP, social and recreational practitioners, and therapy assistants. More specifically, I undertake complex neuropsychological assessments of cognition, emotional functioning, personality, and behaviour by utilising standardised psychometric measurement such as the WAIS-IV and work with the MDT, the client, and their family to put together person-centred care plans that inform supporting the individual. This includes working with those with a diagnosis of brain injury, stroke etc with comorbid diagnoses such as personality disorder, bipolar disorder and substance use disorder. I also undertake completing risk assessments and capacity assessments and collaborate with the MDT and the client. I also offer 1-1 psychological intervention and integrate different models depending on the client’s presenting difficulty and the evidence base. Interventions include Humanistic, Value based work from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), DBT, CBT and CFT. I also build strong therapeutic relationships with families/carers and support them with psychoeducation around brain injury and mental health and any additional tools to their understanding and emotional wellbeing. For instance, around grief and loss. Part of my role is to also support the MDT by providing training and consultancy in my areas of competence such as understanding brain injuries, mental health and mental capacity.
Trainee Counselling Psychologist
Working with individuals living in the community who presented with moderate to severe and enduring mental health difficulties by providing person-centred assessment, intervention, and management to individuals to support recovery. Client diagnoses included Anxiety, Depression, schizophrenia, EUPD and bi-polar disorder as well as histories of complex trauma.I provided an integrative 1-1 psychotherapy for individuals with complex difficulties. Such as Oxford Cognitive Approaches to Psychosis (O-CAP), Humanistic, CBT, CAT and DBT. I also provided trauma stabilisation work with clients, based on Judith Herman’s model of trauma recovery. As well as the therapeutic relationship supporting regulation, I supported clients to rehearse skills to tolerate distress and regulate emotion (utilising compassionate and Buddhist approaches and DBT skills techniques).Within this role, I also provided group psychotherapy and supported the development and facilitation of compassion focused therapy groups for a wide variety of individuals with differing levels of clinical severity with clients presenting problem. I also supported the set up and facilitation of therapy groups for individuals with an eating disorder (Guided Self-Help for eating disorders based on CBT. I also work within an MDT and supported the team in weekly huddles, formulation meetings and other governance related tasks. I also completed a service evaluation of the effectiveness of the groups offered within the CMHT.
Assistant Psychologist
I provide neuropsychological rehabilitation to individuals with cognitive, emotional, psychological, and physical difficulties as a result of a diagnosis of a neurological disorder or a traumatic/acquired brain injury.I was specifically responsible for working within a Multidisciplinary team, to holistically assess areas of difficulty and provide intensive rehabilitation to achieve person-centred goals. I contributed to the assessment of emotional and behavioural symptoms following brain injury by collecting and managing relevant data and utilised software such as word and excel to collate information to build patterns and relationship within the data to present to the MDT. I also utilised de-escalation techniques and provided emotional support to clients when in psychological distress on the unit whilst remaining calm, tolerating others distress and making decisions effectively using clinical judgement as needed to support the clients and/or staff in the situation. This also included highly distressing incidents involving families or those from external organising. Clients’ presentation included being actively suicidal, during substance cravings, brain injury related behavioural dysregulation and other interpersonal conflict within the home.I also provided under supervision, psychological support/therapy integrating a wide range of modalities including CBT, DBT, psychodynamic, ACT, CFT that were adapted to suit the client’s needs and abilities.
