An Goris is a PhD student at KULeuven (Belgium), where she is writing a doctoral dissertation on American popular romance writer Nora Roberts. As the first in-depth academic study of Roberts, Goris' research explores the narrative, paratextual and extratextual dimensions of Roberts' novels and focuses in particular on the interaction between authorship and genre. Tracing the coming into being and the development of the figure of the bestselling author within the context of contemporary genre fiction, Goris' study considers both literary and extraliterary factors in the construction of authorship and genre. An Goris studied Germanic Philology and Literary Studies at the University of Leuven (2002-2007), with a focus on English and comparative literature. Her M.A. thesis focussed on creative writing handbooks for popular romance. As an exchange student An spent a semester at Aarhus University in Denmark (2005) and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver (2007). In the 2009-2010 academic year An was a Fulbright visiting research scholar at DePaul University in Chicago. An has published papers on popular romance writing, the translation of popular romance novels and popular romance handbooks as a form of constraint writing. She is an active member of Popular Culture Association and the International Association for the Study of Popular Romance (IASPR). For IASPR she was conference chair of its second annual conference, which took place in Brussels in August 2010.
