Ana Alvarez was born in Cali, Colombia. She started her studies in voice at the Conservatorio Antonio Maria Valencia. In 2001, she moved to Bogota, where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in music in Choral Conducting under the supervision of Colombian conductor Alejandro Zuleta. Ana Alvarez’s experience with choral conducting began in Colombia where she founded Anita y el Coro Sound and directed the group for two years. During her graduate studies, she continued to gain experience conducting the University of Victoria Chamber Singers, Prima Choir, and Philomela Women’s Choir, while studying with Dr. Bruce E. More and Dr. Gerald King. Graduate study in Victoria also included orchestral conducting. Under Dr. Gerald King and Janos Sandor, Ms. Alvarez studied technique and score analysis, and was the Graduate Assistant Conductor of the University of Victoria Wind Symphony. In addition, she expanded her knowledge of contemporary music by conducting ensembles as a Teaching Assistant for Christopher Butterfield’s Sonic Lab program. She finished her DMA under the supervision of Dr. Hilary Apfelstadt, at the University of Toronto, where she was conductor of the U of T Women’s Chorus and a member of MacMillan Singers. Her research focuses on performance practice of Latin American music.Currently she is the Head of the Music Department at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana. She also conducts the Chamber Choir of the Music Program, as well as the youth chamber choir at the Youth program of the same Department.
