Ana Cadena Payton is an artist and curator based in Monterrey, Mexico. In 2011 she completed Fine Arts at the University of Monterrey (UDEM) and in 2013 she obtained a Master’s Degree in Critical Theory and Museum Studies from the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), also known as the Independent Studies Program held at the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA). In 2022 she completed her Diploma in Exhibition Studies under curator Cuauhtémoc Medina at the Center for Research, Innovation, and Development of the Arts (CEIIDA).In 2013 she became part of “Museo Oral de la Revolución” (MOR), a performative archive led by Paul B. Preciado at the Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) and from 2014 to 2017 she developed “Museo Invisible Fundidora”, researching, archiving and exhibiting work developed with artist Federico Martínez Montoya and the surviving workers of the now extinct smelting company Fundidora de Fierro y Acero de Monterrey. The project has been exhibited in Mexico, Colombia, and Ecuador.Cadena Payton´s curatorial work includes “Poetry of the Commons”, a socially engaged project developed for artist residency “Creación experimental para la justicia social” at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, FEMSA, and LABNL (2023), “Primera Revisión de Colección Abierta / Colección Casa Roja” for Feria de Arte Mexicano Accesible (2022), “A medida incierta” at Nave Generadores del Centro de las Artes de Monterrey (2020), “Memorias colectivas, historicismos y otros déjà vu” at Espacio en Blanco (2018), “Breathing: Chaos and Poetry” with Franco Berardi at Espacio en Blanco (2018), “Doméstico, Urbano y Político: Disonancias colombianas del pop en la colección FEMSA” at the Centro Roberto Garza Sada (CRGS) in 2018.From 2017 to 2019 she was associate profesor of the Art Department at the University of Monterrey. She has also developed public and pedagogical programs such as “Paisaje, Ciudad y Delito” (2018), “Laboratorio Indisciplinario” (2019-2020), “La resolución de la mística: Apuntes sobre videoarte” held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Monterrey (2023). Along with curator Abril Zales she developed “De la punta de la lengua a la planta de los pies”, a seminar currently beneficiary of the JUMEX Foundation grant. Since 2015 she is director of Espacio en Blanco, an artist run space focused on the experimenting and learning of contemporary art.
