Present interests• Metabolomics (or metabonomics) of human biofluids, tissues and model cellular systems for the biochemical characterisation, early diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of diseases and therapeutics. Development of novel methods (based on NMR and mass spectrometry (MS) metabolomics) for disease diagnostics and prediction. Main diseases investigated: prenatal/newborn diseases and cancer (mainly lung, but also renal, pancreatic and glioblastoma). Other diseases of interest: children’s early caries, asthma, age-related macular degeneration.• Metabolomics testing of bio- and/or nano-materials (implantable bone replacements, nanoparticles) for evaluation of material biological performance: tissue regeneration, drug delivery, biocompatibility and biotoxicity. • Metabolomic strategies for the assessment of environmental effects on human metabolism (heavy metals and other pollutants, nanoparticles).• Development of spectroscopy-based (NMR and vibrational) methods for the routine quality control of products and processes in the food industry (brewing, wine and beverages industries).Other interests • Structural and dynamic characterisation of cereal proteins, mono- and oligosaccharides and polysaccharide gels: understanding structure/function relationships in foods.• Structural and dynamic characterisation of cork and other lignocellulosic materials: understanding structure/function relationships in cork, wood and derived materials.• Rheological-NMR (rheo-NMR) of bio- and synthetic polymers: understanding the molecular origins of polymer rheological properties.
