Civil Rights Intern

I am a civil rights intern at the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project (S.T.O.P.). S.T.O.P. is a non-profit advocacy organization and legal services provider that litigates for privacy, specifically abolishing local governments’ mass surveillance systems. S.T.O.P. works to advocate for marginalized groups of people such as Muslim Americans, immigrants, the LGBTQ+ community, Indigenous peoples, and communities of color and highlights the discriminatory impact of surveillance.

Reproductive Justice Collective, Co-Leader Of Direct Support

New York, United States

As co-leader of direct support at The Reproduction Justive Collective (RJC), have guided the way for this working group to conduct both on and off campus events pertaining to how directly support a person who is going through an abortion, looking for birth control options or in need of information pertaining to anything related to these topics of reproductive justice. In doing so, I have been trained and now give trainings on Self Managed Abortion. Between this year and last, I have also led events such as one event called “Abortion as Abolition” with BCRW (Barnard Center for Research on Women), featuring Rafa Kidvai, founder of the Repro Legal Defense Fund (If/When/how). Our working group has also created several zines to explain the process of getting an abortion. In the fall of 2023, we presented at Barnard Center for Research on Women’s “Reproductive Injustice Symposium." I, amongst other students in RJC, are trained abortion doulas and have recently formed an abortion doula collective at Barnard.

Barnard Center For Research On Women Research Assistant

I am a research assistant for BCRW and work with Hope Dector, creative director, on film shoots, in-person interviews I of panelists who come to speak at events, and conduct archival background research on people we feature in film interviews. Some highlights of this job thus far have been being the production Assistant during a film shoot that spotlighted Marsha P. Johnson’s family in Elizabeth, New Jersey, recounting her legacy and how they fight to preserve it. I have also conducted interviews following up from events held at Barnard College, including activist and academic Angela Davis. I also work on video captioning for BCRW's youtube channel which serves as an archive of all BCRW conducted events at Barnard College.

Barnard Archives Reproductive Justice Oral History Internship

New York, United States

The Barnard Archives and Special Collections began this project on the Coalition for Women Prisoners collection as part of a Barnard Reproductive Justice grant. As an oral history intern, I helped produce, conduct, and describe six oral history interviews with former Coalition for Women Prisoners (CWP) members. The CWP was a coalition founded in 1994 to raise the visibility of women impacted by the criminal legal system in New York State, whose archives detailing reproductive justice organizing and policy work are now housed at Barnard. This important collection documents successful and hard-fought efforts to win legislation banning the shackling of pregnant incarcerated people, increasing protections for incarcerated parents with children in the foster care system, and allowing criminalized survivors of domestic violence to apply for reduced sentences. The CWP also documents the everyday work of organizing and direct aid to support the immediate needs of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women and their families. With this internship, I attended a trauma-informed oral history training, consulted librarians and archivists, conducted background research, conducted preliminary interviews, conducted formal interviews, wrote abstracts for interviews, and reviewed transcriptions for corrections. A few months after completing the internship, I had the pleasure of attending a gathering with former CWP and Barnard staff and faculty members to discuss the collection's future direction, connect in person, and reflect on the overall experience of interviewing.

Intern

Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands

I spent a month working as a research intern at Correlation, European Harm Reduction Network. My primary role was to help Correlation with gender-expansive research, explicitly creating an analysis of gender-expansive care for harm reduction organizations to use. This guide will serve as a toolkit for organizations to learn from and develop their own strategies for being more gender-inclusive in their approach to harm reduction. This includes the language used when helping people, the kind of health care, both mental and physical, that people need, and what sorts of resources are recommended to people who come through the doors of harm reduction organizations. Our research consists of a literature review of resources relating to gender and harm reduction. Specifically, we were looking for toolkits aimed at (primarily) European and American organizations wanting to implement a gender-responsive approach to harm reduction. When analyzing these sources, we considered the gender(s) being catered to by the toolkits, the specific gendered issues they addressed, the gendered terms each source used, and how they defined these terms. Gendered issues include things like gender-based violence, women’s barriers to accessing harm reduction, and trans people’s increased risk of contracting HIV.
