I am a dedicated and energetic student at Illinois State University who is striving to become a high school special education teacher. Since January of 2020 I have been employed by SEASPAR, a Special Recreation Association. While maintaining this position when away at school, I also have two on-campus jobs. I work as a Hiring Manager for EMDH and hire over 1,000 quality candidates per school year. I also work as a High Impact Tutor for the Illinois Tutoring Initiative, helping local students become confident in their ability to learn. Through this work, I am able to see what areas future teachers need to focus on to better serve our students. With my involvement here on campus, I have a variety of platforms I can use to enforce this change, such as through the Redbird Educator Scholar Program or through being a Department of Special Education Student Ambassador.My most prideful moment was being the only freshman student to be nominated for the Department of Special Education Student Ambassador Program. As a long-term Ambassador, I engage with prospective students and their families, as well as current students, faculty, and staff. I have had numerous opportunities to represent the Department of Special Education at events, as well as mentor new Ambassadors. This year, I have taken the initiative to create events for students in the major such as participating in the Polar Plunge and hosting a Special Education Resource Night. I was even given the opportunity to represent the student body at Illinois State University in a Subject Matter Hearing for paid student teaching in Springfield. To supplement my involvement with the education community, I engage in organizations that serve populations from young children to veterans. Volunteering is a key value of mine and has remained at the forefront of my thoughts while attending Illinois State University. While succeeding academically is an important aspect of my time here on campus, I believe that the impact I am leaving on the College of Education and our community is an even more important aspect of my identity.
