Igem (International Genetically Engineered Machine Competition)
Member of the 2014 Aberdeen iGEM team - used synthetic biology approaches to design Escherichia detect antibodies in the early stages of infection with the Trypanosoma brucei parasite, which causes African Sleeping Sickness. The goal of the project was to replace heavy and bulky equipment needed for the current diagnosis with a diagnostic backpack, based on pre-made E. coli cultures. Delivered a poster and PowerPoint Presentation at the Giant Jamboree at MIT in October 2014, where we competed against 245 international teams. As part of the project, we also promoted synthetic biology and our project among experts in the field and the general public, by taking part in a Synthetic Biology Conference in Edinburgh, writing blog-post, series of radio interviews, talks and making a website.
