Technology is meant to support society, and there are opportunities for tech to support underserved communities, such as art and humanities. My PhD in Computer science/Human-Computer Interaction along with my training in costuming and craftsmanship lets me research, craft and design technologies and interactive experiences for the most challenging domains, including martial arts, costume design, and online craft learning, awarded as top 10 research at SSU. I am an expert in virtual reality, maker culture, crowdsourcing and qualitative methods, with over 20+ publications and deliverables. One of my passions is empowering people to craft, make and build; from laser cutters to handsewing; as an assistant professor, I can teach, research and craft technologies suited to the needs of users and stakeholders. Principal Investigator & Assistant ProfessorSonoma State University Aug 2017 - Aug 2021Rohnert Park, Ca, UsI was a mixed-methods UX Principal Investigator & Human-Computer Interaction/Maker/Computer Science Assistant Professor at Sonoma State University. As a principal investigator and lab founder, my research lab and I deliver design guidelines on how to better serve crafting novices trying to learn crafting online, an ever-increasing reality in this domain. This involves carefully performing qualitative analyses on social media, observing the strengths and weaknesses of the tool, and delivering guidelines. I also mentored and empowered student researchers into UX, and graduates are among, Fortune 500 companies, game studios, and PhD programs in UX careers. I teach a human-centric, project-focused approach to the entire department, leading and managing projects serving in a huge variety of domains, from fire management, language learning, incorporating more visibility to law enforcement, virtual reality games, cooking education, heatstroke death prevention in cars, among many others. I teach a core general education course on makerspace, maker culture, and craft for the entire university. I serve as a maker representative and leader for the university for students and faculty, and how to connect their disciplines to makerspaces. I was awarded $5K to provide the university an interdisciplinary Maker Faire, and to support craft/maker projects that contribute to a celebration of craft, maker, and innovative artifacts. I fundraised $10K to bring women students to fully support registration, travel, and physically attend the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing 2020. (Physical venue later canceled) -
