  • Department Of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, University Of Notre Dame
    Research Assistant
Department Of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, University Of Notre Dame Aug 2016 - Feb 2017
Particle Sizing of Nickel+Aluminum Pellets:Used isostatic presses to create condensed pellets of varying amounts of Nickel and Aluminum, which were then polished down with industrial sanders. Then, using HELIOS & LEO scanning electron microscopes, analyzed and quantified particle-sizing and particle-distribution of the Ni+Al pellets in order to quantify the propagation of combustion (i.e. solid flame) through these Ni+Al mixtures.X-Ray Diffraction Measurements of Cryo-Milled Aluminum:Use cryogenic ball-milling to cryomill aluminum under liquid nitrogen temperatures of 77K (-196°C). Then place cryo-milled aluminum under X-ray Diffractometer to gather data that then is used to calculate changes in crystal structure of the aluminum due to the cryogenic milling.
  • Department Of Physics, University Of Notre Dame
    Summer Research Intern
Department Of Physics, University Of Notre Dame Jun 2016 - Aug 2016
    Notre Dame, In, Us
We use scanning tunneling microscopy and atomic manipulation to create assembled crystals and quasicrystals by moving single atoms and small molecules adsorbed on a host material to create artificially engineered systems that are a new form of quantum simulation that experimentally realize novel and untested electronic states.I run numerical simulations of the electric system by building specific models based on scattering theory. The model calculates the changes to the electronic state as electrons scatter from each of the adsorbed atoms assembled on the surface.I then use the realization of the scattering theory numerical simulations to plan the next steps on the lab experiments. We will perform simulations for quasicrystals formed by Penrose tiles and one-dimensional topological boundary states.

Under the guidance of Prof. Kenjiro Gomes, we use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and atomic manipulation to assemble—one atom at a time—artificially engineered electronic systems.Atomic manipulation provides tuning capabilities that allows tailoring material properties at the electronic level, and offers a new level of control that could create new nanoscale devices for energy and information technologies.
